Our maps are built on open data and openly licensed code that other people chose to share. Here is whose work it is, and the licence each part comes under.
Maps
The map style, SightQuests Topo, is our own. What it draws comes from these projects.
OpenStreetMap
Roads, rivers, fells and place names: nearly everything on our maps. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database License.
OpenMapTiles
The vector tile schema: how OpenStreetMap data is cut into the layers our style draws. © OpenMapTiles. The schema's design is licensed under CC BY 4.0, its code under the BSD 3-Clause licence.
OpenFreeMap
Serves the vector tiles for every map, free and without an API key. The credit on the maps doesn't have to name it, so we thank it here.
CARTO
Draws the simpler fallback map for browsers without WebGL2, or when our own map can't load. © OpenStreetMap contributors © CARTO.
Elevation
Hike maps, and Explore with Relief switched on, show contour lines and hill shading.
Mapterhorn
Terrain tiles that join open elevation models from around the world into one. We compute the contour lines and the hill shading from them ourselves, so what you see is our work on their data. Mapterhorn lists every source it uses; these are the ones behind the places we cover.

Where the relief comes from Copernicus GLO-30, the global model that fills the gaps between national ones, it is “produced using Copernicus WorldDEM-30 © DLR e.V. 2010-2014 and © Airbus Defence and Space GmbH 2014-2018 provided under COPERNICUS by the European Union and ESA; all rights reserved”.
The organisations in charge of the Copernicus programme by law or by delegation do not incur any liability for any use of the Copernicus WorldDEM-30.
Software
The code that draws our maps is openly licensed. Those licences ask us to pass their notices on, and our production build strips them from the code, so here they are: each library's own, and those of the packages built into MapLibre GL JS.
